He steps into this role following the departure of Faishal Ibrahim, who resigned from his political positions, including his seat in Parliament and membership in the People’s Action Party, on July 20. Faishal’s resignation was announced by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and was attributed to a lapse in judgment regarding his interactions with a female member of the public.
In his remarks to the media, Zaqy emphasized his intention to collaborate closely with the M3+ network, along with volunteers and community partners, to enhance initiatives that support and empower Singapore’s Malay-Muslim community. He underscored the importance of building on the progress that has already been made, reaffirming his commitment to ensuring that the community continues to receive focused support.
Zaqy expressed sorrow over Faishal’s exit, reflecting on their nearly two-decade-long working relationship. The circumstances of Faishal’s resignation have been met with disappointment by several Malay-Muslim lawmakers and community leaders, who nonetheless acknowledged the contributions he made during his tenure in office.
