During a visit to Brunei in honor of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah’s 80th birthday, Singapore’s Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and the Sultan reiterated their dedication to enhancing the relationship between their two nations. This visit provided an opportunity for both leaders to outline significant future milestones, notably the 50th anniversary of their defense partnership set for 2026 and the 60th anniversary of the Currency Interchangeability Agreement scheduled for 2027.
The discussions between Lee and Sultan Bolkiah extended beyond ceremonial acknowledgments, focusing on a forward-looking agenda that aims to expand cooperation in critical areas such as energy, food security, and supply chain resilience. They also emphasized the importance of fostering people-to-people exchanges, which can serve as a foundation for stronger bilateral ties.
In addition to his meeting with the Sultan, Lee engaged with Brunei’s Crown Prince and other senior ministers. These discussions were geared towards initiatives that aim to fortify connections among future leaders and the youth of both countries, ensuring that the upcoming generations continue to build upon the strong foundations of the current relationship.
Minister Lee’s itinerary in Brunei also included participation in official birthday celebrations and interactions with Singapore Armed Forces personnel stationed in Brunei for training purposes. He further visited a Singapore-operated aquaculture farm, highlighting the diverse facets of cooperation between Singapore and Brunei that extend into various sectors including agriculture and defense.
