Meta has introduced a new feature for Instagram called Muse Image, which allows users to generate AI-powered images using photos from publicly accessible Instagram accounts. However, this development has ignited privacy concerns, as the feature is automatically activated, permitting users to incorporate public Instagram profiles into their prompts for creating customized AI images. Privacy advocates are worried that many Instagram users may not realize their publicly shared images could be utilized in this manner, due to the feature’s default setting.
According to Meta, the tool is equipped with safety measures, ensuring that private accounts and users under the age of 18 are automatically excluded from being used in AI image generation. Adult users with public accounts have the option to opt out by modifying their settings in the “Sharing and Reuse” section. Nonetheless, privacy experts argue that the opt-out feature is not easily accessible, and they contend that users should have been given the opportunity to opt in, rather than having their content automatically available for AI use.
Concerns have also been raised by advocates regarding the potential inclusion of children in photos posted by adults, which could lead to their images being used in AI-generated content, despite existing protections for accounts belonging to minors. These privacy implications have prompted calls for more stringent controls and transparency in how such features are implemented and communicated to users.
Meta assures that Muse Image has built-in safeguards to prevent misuse and provides users with the ability to report any inappropriate AI-generated images. Currently, this feature can be accessed through the Meta AI app, Instagram Stories within the United States, and WhatsApp in a select number of countries, with plans for further expansion. As the company continues to rollout this technology, the balance between innovation and user privacy remains a focal point of discussion.
