In light of recent developments, Taiwan is urging Japan and the Philippines to consider its rights and interests while negotiating maritime boundaries and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) in the region. The call comes after Japan and the Philippines announced plans to initiate talks to delineate maritime boundaries and continental shelf claims, adhering to international law. Experts have observed that certain areas under discussion for these zones could potentially overlap with territories claimed by Taiwan.
Taiwanese authorities have been assured by both Japan and the Philippines that any agreements reached will not impose legal obligations on unrelated third parties and will adhere to established international legal norms. In a bid to safeguard its maritime interests, Taiwan has expressed its intention to maintain ongoing dialogue with both nations. This includes protecting fishing rights and ensuring access to resources in the contested waters. Furthermore, Taiwan has emphasized that its existing agreements with Japan and the Philippines will remain unchanged.
This situation unfolds against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions, particularly following China’s assertions over waters east of Taiwan. China has conducted coast guard patrols in the area, claims that Taiwan has firmly rejected, reiterating its stance on sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction.
From the Philippine side, officials have clarified that formal negotiations with Japan have yet to commence. They have cautioned against premature speculation regarding the potential ramifications of any forthcoming agreement on fishing rights or territorial claims, suggesting it is still too early to make such assessments.
