Singapore and Thailand are set to elevate their partnership, focusing on enhancing both bilateral and regional cooperation, as they gear up for their respective ASEAN chairmanships in the coming years. Singapore will assume the chairmanship in 2027, with Thailand following in 2028. This commitment was solidified during the fifth Singapore-Thailand Leaders’ Retreat held on September 2 in Bangkok, marking a significant dialogue between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. Notably, this retreat was the first of its kind in over a decade and the inaugural meeting between the two leaders, underscoring the strength of their diplomatic ties.

As both nations prepare for their leadership roles within ASEAN, they have agreed to forge a multi-year agenda aimed at ensuring a seamless transition and continuity. The discussions highlighted mutual interests in several critical areas, including the advancement of artificial intelligence, digital and green economies, and ensuring energy resilience. Additionally, the leaders emphasized the importance of food security, connectivity, defense and security cooperation, and efforts to combat transnational crime. A shared commitment to a rules-based international order and deeper ASEAN regional integration was also reaffirmed.

Energy collaboration emerged as a key focus, with both countries backing initiatives like the ASEAN Power Grid and the Laos-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore Power Integration Project. This project is pivotal as it facilitates Singapore’s importation of renewable hydropower from Laos, routed through Thailand and Malaysia, thus promoting sustainable energy solutions in the region.

The retreat also witnessed the signing of a memorandum of understanding aimed at advancing social sector development. This agreement encompasses the exchange of knowledge and research on social welfare policies and fosters cooperation between relevant institutions, highlighting the two countries’ commitment to social progress.

Economic interactions between Singapore and Thailand remain robust, with bilateral trade reaching approximately US$52.4 billion in 2025. Singapore has held its position as the largest foreign direct investor in Thailand for three consecutive years, reflecting the deep economic ties and mutual benefits both nations continue to derive from their partnership.
