Singapore and Luxembourg are poised to deepen their collaboration in cutting-edge fields such as quantum computing, artificial intelligence, and satellite communications. This effort marks a continuation of their enduring partnership, as both nations seek to leverage their unique positions as small states with limited natural resources but extensive international connections. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasized the shared challenges and opportunities faced by the two countries, highlighting their evolution into pivotal financial and business centers that cater to broader regional markets.

Highlighting the strong economic linkage, Wong pointed out that Luxembourg holds the position of the largest European Union investor in Singapore. Conversely, Singapore ranks as Luxembourg’s second-largest investment destination within the EU, illustrating the robust economic ties that underpin their relationship. Both countries are also committed to enhancing the relationship between ASEAN and the European Union, advocating for regional integration and underscoring the importance of an open, rules-based international system.

The diplomatic ties between Singapore and Luxembourg are commemorating a significant milestone with the celebration of 50 years of formal relations. Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden’s official visit to Singapore from September 6 to 8 underscores this occasion. During his visit, Frieden engaged in discussions with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, where they explored geopolitical developments and strategies to foster stability, predictability, and adherence to the rule of law. The opening of Luxembourg’s first resident embassy in Singapore signals a strengthened commitment to engaging more deeply with Singapore and the region at large.

As part of his visit, Prime Minister Frieden is slated to deliver the 48th Singapore Lecture on September 8, where he will delve into Europe’s evolving role and autonomy within the global landscape. This lecture is anticipated to provide insights into how Europe can navigate its position amidst changing international dynamics.
