Technical Teams to Meet: US and Ukraine to Detail New Arms and Drone Deals

by admin477351

Technical teams from Ukraine and the United States are preparing to meet in the coming weeks to hammer out the details of a sweeping new defense agreement. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that these meetings will focus on two key areas: Ukraine’s purchase of American long-range weapons and the potential US acquisition of Ukrainian drones.
The groundwork for this expanded cooperation was laid during a meeting between Zelensky and US President Donald Trump at the UN General Assembly. Now, the focus shifts from high-level politics to practical implementation. A Ukrainian delegation will travel to the US at the end of September or in early October for these crucial technical discussions.
For Ukraine, the priority is to finalize the purchase of long-range systems, which it sees as essential for its military objectives. These weapons would allow for more effective strikes on Russian logistics and command centers, complementing the capabilities of its existing drone fleet. The deal is an extension of an ongoing $90 billion support agreement.
For the United States, the talks represent an opportunity to learn from and invest in Ukrainian military innovation. Zelensky confirmed that the joint technical teams would “start work on details of the purchase of Ukrainian drones by the US.” This move recognizes the effectiveness and ingenuity of Ukraine’s unmanned systems program.
These military negotiations are part of a broader, deepening partnership that also includes economic elements, such as a joint investment fund. The entire effort is backed by tangible security enhancements on the ground, including the recent arrival of a US-made Patriot air defense system from Israel and the expectation of two more systems soon.
