Alex Eala, a rising tennis sensation from the Philippines, has climbed to a career-high world ranking of No. 18, setting a new benchmark as the highest-ranked female tennis player ever from Southeast Asia. The 21-year-old broke the previous regional record of world No. 19, thanks to her impressive performance throughout the 2026 season.
This year, Eala clinched two singles titles, triumphing at the Birmingham Open in June and the DC Open in August. Her victory in Birmingham was particularly historic, as it marked the first time a player from the Philippines had claimed a WTA singles title.
Eala’s remarkable journey this season also saw her make waves at Wimbledon. She advanced to the fourth round by defeating the defending champion, Iga Swiatek, a feat that underscored her rapid ascent in the tennis world.
Looking ahead, Eala is gearing up to compete in both singles and mixed doubles categories at the US Open. She will partner with Felix Auger-Aliassime from Canada for the mixed doubles event, adding another exciting chapter to her burgeoning career.
