As nations navigate the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on various sectors, a coalition of countries, including Singapore, the European Union, and 19 others, is advocating for enhanced international oversight and safety measures for frontier AI models. This initiative underscores the global consensus on the need for robust frameworks to harness AI’s potential while mitigating its risks.
During the recent United Nations General Assembly in New York, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong highlighted the importance of international cooperation in AI governance. He emphasized that AI, if left unchecked, poses risks that transcend national boundaries, necessitating global collaboration to ensure that these technologies remain under human control and oversight.
The joint declaration, which Singapore is the only Southeast Asian country to endorse, seeks to establish a foundation for international dialogue on AI safety. It encourages the development of common standards and improved transparency, urging governments to create shared methods for reporting serious AI safety incidents. Additionally, the declaration suggests exploring the formation of an international body focused on managing frontier AI capabilities, which could help set standards and coordinate responses as AI systems evolve.
Participating countries are urging AI companies to reinforce their safety practices, including rigorous testing and independent evaluations before deploying AI systems. This call to action aims to prevent potential safety and security risks associated with rapidly advancing AI models.
Notably, the United States and China, two of the biggest players in the AI sector, have not yet joined this initiative. However, the declaration remains open for additional endorsements, inviting more countries to join the effort for stronger safeguards in frontier AI development.
