During a summit held on September 25, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping engaged in discussions focused on the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The meeting came as Iran put forward a proposal for a seven-day plan aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reducing regional hostilities.
President Xi advocated for a return to the negotiation framework established in June, which had previously resulted in a temporary ceasefire. This call for renewed dialogue was met with support from Iran, which simultaneously promoted its own peace initiative. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi outlined the plan’s objectives, which included reopening the Strait of Hormuz to normal maritime traffic within a week if the United States agreed to the terms. The proposal also demanded an end to hostilities, the lifting of the U.S. blockade on Iranian ports, the release of frozen Iranian funds, and the removal of oil sanctions.
While the United States has not publicly accepted Iran’s proposal, it has acknowledged ongoing constructive discussions through mediators, particularly on issues related to Iran’s nuclear program. However, Iran has remained firm on its stance, refusing to make concessions on its nuclear activities, including uranium enrichment.
During the summit, President Trump cautioned President Xi against providing any form of support to Iran, directly or indirectly. U.S. Ambassador to China, David Perdue, reported that China had reassured the U.S. that it was not assisting Iran in any capacity.
The conflict has significantly disrupted energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz, exacerbating tensions across the Gulf region, including Yemen and Lebanon. In response to the growing security concerns, countries like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Turkey have been in discussions to enhance military and intelligence coordination.
