Singapore and Germany have committed to enhancing their collaborative efforts in the realms of artificial intelligence and industrial technology, underscoring their strategic partnership with a new roadmap. This development follows a meeting between Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on October 27, as both nations aim to harness the transformative potential of AI across various sectors.
The updated work plan builds on a roadmap first introduced in 2024, focusing on industrial AI, the digital economy, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies. Both leaders emphasized the transformative power of AI in boosting productivity, creating new business opportunities, and enhancing industrial processes. Specifically, Singapore and Germany plan to expand the application of industrial AI in fields such as manufacturing, robotics, and logistics, while also ensuring that AI technologies are deployed responsibly with a focus on safety and security.
In addition to AI, the partnership will intensify research collaborations during the Singapore-Germany Year of Innovation. Joint projects are anticipated to cover a range of cutting-edge technologies including artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technology, space exploration, green technologies, and advanced manufacturing. Building on existing academic and research partnerships, both countries aim to accelerate innovation and technological advancements.
The cooperation extends beyond technology, as Singapore and Germany also seek to bolster economic ties between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union. Singapore plans to leverage its 2027 ASEAN chairmanship to advance regional cooperation, including efforts towards an ASEAN-EU free trade agreement and enhanced digital system integration.
Moreover, discussions between the leaders included regional energy connectivity and the protection of critical underwater infrastructure, such as subsea cables and pipelines. Germany’s endorsement of Singapore’s voluntary initiative on underwater infrastructure protection highlights their shared commitment to upholding international law and promoting multilateral cooperation within a rules-based international framework.
