South African jurist Navi Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her extensive efforts in promoting human rights, strengthening international law, and supporting peaceful conflict resolution. The Norwegian Nobel Committee commended Pillay’s influential role in defending human rights during South Africa’s apartheid era, her service on international criminal tribunals, and her leadership as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Pillay’s career is marked by significant contributions to international justice, including chairing the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory. In September 2025, this commission concluded that Israel had committed genocidal acts in Gaza, alleging an intent to destroy Palestinians in the territory. This report was strongly criticized by Israel, which accused the commission of bias and rejected the findings. The Nobel Committee highlighted Pillay’s ability to demonstrate how legal institutions and universal legal principles can help prevent violence and resolve conflicts, describing her as a respected jurist whose independence and expertise have fortified the institutions of international law.

Pillay, 85, received news of the award while attending a gathering of human rights lawyers and jurists in Nuremberg, Germany. She expressed surprise at the announcement and stressed the importance of impartially examining evidence and applying the law. Her career has included roles as a judge on international criminal tribunals and involvement in proceedings at the International Court of Justice concerning allegations of genocide against Myanmar.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa praised the award, noting Pillay’s contributions to peace, human dignity, and justice. Human rights advocates also recognized her efforts in advancing accountability for serious international crimes, including genocide and sexual violence. This award underscores Pillay’s decades-long commitment to international law and highlights the vital role legal institutions play in safeguarding human rights and addressing global atrocities.
