Singapore is revisiting its political salary framework as the government accepts recommendations for adjustments to the compensation of political officeholders. This move comes amidst a broader debate on attracting capable individuals to public service, a topic addressed by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong during a recent parliamentary session.
Reflecting on his own path to politics, Wong shared his personal journey from the civil service to the political arena. In 2011, he left his role as the chief executive of the Energy Market Authority, stepping into politics with uncertainty about his future position, responsibilities, or salary. His decision, described as a “complete leap of faith,” also meant forgoing his civil service pension, as he had not yet completed the requisite 15-year service period.
Wong emphasized that his decision was motivated by a desire to contribute to Singapore’s development through a new form of public service. Since being elected to Parliament in 2011, Wong has served in various ministerial roles before becoming Prime Minister, experiencing firsthand the challenges of political service, which he noted involves making difficult decisions and setting strategic priorities.
In discussing the need for a sustainable political salary framework, Wong highlighted the importance of ensuring that future generations remain willing to take on the responsibilities of political office. The upcoming adjustments, slated for implementation from October 15, 2026, will provide a one-off salary increase of up to 9% for current officeholders, based on individual circumstances and performance.
Wong’s statements underline a key objective: maintaining a balance where public office is pursued primarily out of a commitment to serve the nation, while also offering competitive compensation to attract talented Singaporeans to the political landscape.
